VoiSona, formerly known as CeVIO Pro (チェビオ Pro (仮), is an audio workstation (DAW), VSTi-compatible, commercial vocal synthesizer software that reproduces realistic singing voices with AI technology, and is the sister brand of the CeVIO voice synthesis technology developed by Techno-Speech, Inc. in collaboration with CeVIO Project. The alpha (α) version known as CeVIO Pro was released on February 24, 2022 for free download.[1] The beta (β) version was released on June 2, 2022 under the new name "VoiSona", with the official production version released on September 1, 2022.
Etymology[]
VoiSona is a coined word that combines the the words "Voice" and "Persona", which has meanings such as personality and charm, and is named with the message that you want to express various personalities with voice.
Overview[]
Originally introduced as "CeVIO Pro", VoiSona is advertised as a VSTi plug-in type software that runs through a digital audio workstation (DAW). CeVIO Pro was first announced on February 27, 2020 through the Techno-Speech, Inc. official Twitter account and featured a demonstration of its singing capabilities featuring Sato Sasara.[2]. Another demonstration was uploaded on March 4 where it was confirmed that CeVIO Pro would be available for both Windows and MacOS operating systems.[3] On March 11, another demonstration showcased the software's pitch curve parameter functions.[4] On March 27, a demonstration showing CeVIO Pro's dual score viewing was shown.[5]
Unlike CeVIO Creative Studio and CeVIO AI, CeVIO Pro was proposed to be released as a subscription-based software rather than a single purchase method.[6]
On November 17, 2021, Techno-Speech, Inc. revealed several screenshots of CeVIO Pro and stated that production was moving smoothly.[7]
On January 31, 2022, a preview of a CeVIO Pro vocal was shown on Twitter.[8] While not yet referred to by name, the official CeVIO account noted that it was the first time this vocal was being heard and described the vocal as "neutral and cool".[9] Further announcements were expected within the next month.[10]
On February 18, Techno-Speech, Inc. announced that the alpha (α) version of CeVIO Pro would be releasing for free, starting on February 24 at noon. They noted that design, specifications, names, and more were subject to change. After the official release, CeVIO Pro itself and the default voice library that came with it would remain free. Along with the announcement, a silhouette of the default library was shown.[11] This character was planned to be revealed the next day.[12] This vocal was later revealed to be Chis-A who was released alongside the CeVIO Pro editor on February 24, 2022[13]
On May 26, 2022, Techno-Speech, Inc. announced that CeVIO Pro would be officially rebranded as "VoiSona" and would be releasing on June 2, 2022 for free digital download following the beta (β) release of the program.[14] A DTM article was announced on the newly created VoiSona Twitter account and is planned to discuss in detail about the relationship with CeVIO as a sister brand and the prospects for the official release after the beta version.[15] The first vocalist announced for the new software is Chis-A and will be released as a free download for both the beta version and the official version that is currently in development.[16]
VoiSona's (β) beta edition was released on June 2, 2022 as intended alongside it's first vocalist Chis-A. Various updates were made under the version 0.6.0.8 including many processing improvements and bug fixes found in the latter version. Techno-Speech, Inc. announced the same day that following the conversion, the previous iteration, CeVIO Pro, would be discontinued along with Chis-A's Song Voice after one month following VoiSona's release.[17] With the release of VoiSona version 0.6.2 on July 7, 2022, Techno-Speech announced officially that the alpha version of CeVIO Pro up to version 0.5.0 would no longer be available on August 31, 2022 alongside Chis-A's Song Voice.[18]
On August 11, 2022 the official VoiSona Twitter announced that VoiSona's product version would be released on September 1, 2022 along with it's first additional voice library Sato Sasara. It was stated that while the VoiSona software itself would remain free for download as well as it's default voice library Chis-A, additional voice libraries would be released on a subscription service basis. Sato Sasara is set to be released via subscription plan and users have the option to choose the annual plan priced at ¥6,600 yen per year or the monthly plan priced ¥880 per month. Users who have already purchased CeVIO AI Sato Sasara Song Voice are able to enter in the product key of the same product following the official release date for the VoiSona version of Sato Sasara and can be used free of charge for one year. The product key input deadline will last until August 31, 2023.[19]
VoiSona was officially released on September 1, 2022 alongside the official production version of Chis-A. Due to a server failure, sales of the additional voice library Sato Sasara were postponed and the restoration status was to be announced on VoiSona's official Twitter. Following the release, Techno-Speech announced two new vocalists based on the voices of Sho Kiryuin (鬼龍院翔) from the Japanese visual kei rock band Golden Bomber (ゴールデンボンバー) and Sumire Yoshida (吉田菫), known professionally as Suu (すぅ), from the Japanese band SILENT SIREN (サイレントサイレン).[20][21] These vocals were later revealed to be Kirune and AiSuu and were announced to be released for VoiSona on December 19, 2022.
On June 29, 2023, included with the release of the VoiSona's eighth vocal MYK-IV, Techno-Speech, Inc. announced that MYK-IV would also be equipped with a "2.0 Beta" voice version rendered using a new engine of VoiSona that is currently under development.[22]
On August 26, 2023, in celebration of VoiSona's first anniversary on September 1, Techno-Speech, Inc. announced the development of a new text-to-speech software addition to the VoiSona brand, VoiSona Talk.[23] VoiSona Talk was released on September 1, 2023 as a free download on the official VoiSona Talk website.[24][25][26]
Regarding the move from CeVIO Pro to VoiSona[]
On June 2, an interview was held through a DTM Magazine article featuring Techno-Speech, Inc. CEO, Keiichiro Oura, and producer of the Entertainment Division, Tsukada Keisuke. Oura began with a statement exclaiming that CeVIO Pro received more downloads than initially expected, and was surprised to hear a lot of feedback due to the operating environment now being available not only on Windows but also on Mac, and as it is a free release, was pleased that it could be used by different users. Following was an overview of the current details on updates to the software since the initial alpha version. The re-branding from CeVIO Pro to VoiSona was discussed. As it is an AI singing software that Techno-Speech plans and develops independently, they have developed a sister brand relationship with CeVIO, which is operated mainly by the CeVIO Project that is jointly conducted by five companies including their company. In order to make its standing position easier to understand, the name was changed to the CeVIO sister software brand "VoiSona". It was noted that by the time the alpha version was announced, the name VoiSona had already been decided on internally and were preparing for trademark registration which was completed on February 27, shortly after the announcement of the alpha version.[27]
Subscription and Fees[]
Following this was the announcement of VoiSona's fee structure. It was stated that the Song Editor itself would remain free for the alpha (α) version, the current beta (β) version, and the official production version scheduled to be released in September 2022. It was stated that the waveform data of the singing voice synthesized with the engine could be used free of charge regardless of whether it is individual/corporate or commercial/non-commercial usage. However, Techno-Speech announced a plan to gradually add voice libraries in the future, and plans to offer these as subscription-based software. It was stated, there would no direct compatibility between VoiSona and CeVIO AI. However, as a sister brand, Techno-Speech would like to positively consider cross-platform voice library products, which are often requested and would also continue to provide the default voice library, Chis-A, for free.
As for the pricing and subscription fees, Techno-Speech, Inc. plans to release additional voice library for a fee, based on an annual subscription plan that will be priced around ¥6,600 yen including tax. Regarding the lineup of voice libraries, a decision was made to make Sato Sasara into a cross-platform vocalist, and is being adjusted in the direction of simultaneous implementation with the official release of VoiSona in the fall. Techno-Speech is planning to set up a preferential plan for CeVIO AI product license holders for the cross-platform voice library and will consult with CeVIO Project about Sato Sasara. It was decided that Sasara would be released for the first year free of charge for CeVIO AI Sato Sasara Song Voice license holders only and the regular price from the second year going forward. For VoiSona genuine voice library products that are not cross-platform from CeVIO, Techno-Speech has currently decided to produce a completely new character for a new CV male voice library. The other announced current project is an English version of Chis-A. Over the course of the end of the year to the beginning of the next year, Techno-Speech plans to schedule announcements and releases, and prepare for the visuals of the libraries. In addition, there are several projects that were not discussed in this decision but are in development.
It was noted that the biggest reason of making a subscription is that would be possible to continuously back up to the performers. Techno-Speech mentioned that in the world of voice synthesis and singing voice synthesis, guarantees are paid to performers such as voice actors at the stage of making products, but it becomes clear, and no matter how big the character becomes a hit, the performers in many cases receive no additional payment. In order to build a healthier ecosystem, Oura thought that a system that could continuously back up to the performers would be necessary. In addition, in the case of corporate use or commercial use, traditionally, there was a system of paying a fee after making a separate contract, but it is noted to be complicated and difficult to handle. As such, they have also simplified the usage fee for such waveforms (Chis-A being free, and the additional voice libraries within the subscription fee), making it an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand system. On the other hand, because it is a subscription, Oura would like to actively update the software, including the voice libraries.[28]
